Anthony G. (Tony) Calamai joined Appalachian as department chair and professor of physics in 2000. He earned his Ph.D. in experimental physics from NC State University in 1990 and subsequently received a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University. After two successful years of focused research at Harvard, the absence of classroom experiences called Calamai back to a teaching and research balanced environment and he joined on the faculty at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USIP).

Calamai received two prestigious teaching awards and earned an early promotion to Associate Professor at USIP, he then moved to Saint Joseph's University (SJU). At SJU he assumed his first academic leadership role as director of the physics department for four years. In his director and chair roles at both SJU and ASU, he has demonstrated the ability to grow and improve the curriculum and enrollments in his programs. Since coming to ASU he has had several external grants, served as Chair of the Council of Chairs, and was inducted to the College of Art & Sciences Academy of Outstanding Teachers.

In addition to his faculty appointments, Calamai has worked as a visiting researcher at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory; the National Institute of Standards and Technology; and at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, Germany.
