Dr. Gerald Cecil is Professor of Physics and Astronomy at UNC-CH and
Director of UNC-CH Observatories. He has been at UNC-CH since 1989.
An astrophysicist, he has used NASA facilities such as the Hubble Space
Telescope and Chandra X-ray observatories, as well as ground-based
telescopes such as SOAR and Gemini in Chile to study explosive gaseous
outflows from galaxies. As Project Scientist, he co-led the design
phase of the SOAR telescope. An expert in imaging spectroscopy,
he is currently building instruments for SOAR to prototype concepts for
the Very Large Telescope at the European Southern Observatory, also
in Chile.
